For clients finding it difficult to pay full fee, I offer some appointments at a lower rate (sliding-scale). This is based on financial need and availability. This not only makes therapy accessible to more people but also creates an opportunity for those paying the full rate to give back to your community. When you pay the higher end of the fee, you are quietly helping another person get support. Together, we can do our small bit to make sure those with financial hardships are not left out because of money and we keep mental health care open to everyone in need.

Ways to optimize your teletherapy experience

Adapted from practice guidelines originally developed by Todd Essig and Gillian Isaacs Russell.
1. Technology check:
  • Before the session, please check your internet connectivity, and audio-video settings.
  • You could do a trial run, check for and troubleshoot any glitches observed, run necessary updates if any, well ahead of the session.
  • You could minimize distractions and interruptions by turning off device notifications, and even informing household members of your appointments, for example.
  • Please avoid answering calls or texting (unless it is absolutely urgent), or web browsing during the session.
  • It is helpful to set aside around 10 to 15 minutes before sessions to allow your focus to shift towards therapy.
  • Similarly, after sessions, please set aside few minutes to allow yourself to pause, reflect, and process.
  • It is not helpful to immediately dive into activities or interactions, before and after the session.
  • Sit upright comfortably in a chair, without lying down or reclining. To the extent possible, please position yourself as if we are in an offline session.
  • You can keep some tissues within reach. Feel free to grab a glass of water. Please avoid snacking or eating during the session.
  • In an offline session, it is my responsibility to ensure privacy is maintained in my office. In online sessions when we meet remotely, you will need to ensure your privacy from your end.
  • Choose a secure space where you can be certain you are not being heard or watched and will not be interrupted.
  • You may choose to wear earphones.
  • Be mindful of presence of any smart device, for example- Alexa, in your environment which may record if it perceives utterance of a trigger word. It may be helpful to switch them off during the session.
  • The teletherapy space is meant for us to professionally engage, where I can help you as your psychotherapist.
  • It is important for you to be fully present during the sessions. Please avoid multi-tasking or driving or snacking during sessions. It is also recommended to not use any substances such as alcohol or cigarettes, which may lead to judgement impairment and inability to engage in psychotherapy.
  • If a client engages in offensive, discriminatory or inappropriate actions, I reserve the right to end the teletherapy session.
  • Try to join the session from the same place via the link provided for our meetings whenever you can. Your physical environment is part of the experience, and the consistency and predictability this brings is helpful.
  • You may please wear clothes which you would put on for an in-person offline appointment. Even if I cannot see your entire attire, you are aware of your outfit, and it can subtly affect our therapy session.
